Background

The AMERICAN STUDIES RESOURCE CENTER (ASRC) at the Mariano Marcos   State University (MMSU) was initially  established  in  1984.  It  was  formally  inaugurated   on January 14, 1985 with Mr. Herwald H. Morton, Director, United States Information   Service (USIS) and Counselor of the Embassy for  Public Affairs, as guest of honor. The   ASRC-MMSU is the center for Northern Luzon with 13 other centers located in strategic   regions in the country.

The ASRC-MMSU has a distinct  role which cannot be duplicated by any institution/agency in the local information environment.  With its varied information resources   and services including its equipment and facilities, the Center is contributing significantly to   human development in this part of the country.

The Center has the following objectives:

     1. To make available various information resources  about U.S.: its history, life and  culture, its political and social processes.

     2. To promote understanding of the U.S. and its people.

     3. To support courses related to the study of the U.S.

     4. To   serve   as  the  venue  of  seminars  in  American studies and as a focal point at  which visitors may spend time in campus with students and faculty -- Fulbright  and East-West Center lecturers, Asia Foundation experts and other American and Filipino specialists in American studies.

     5. To provide educational advising services for fellow Filipinos who wish to study in the U.S.

The  ASRC-MMSU  is  housed  at  the  first  floor,  north-western wing of the MMSU   Main Library.
